Phenolic Label Specs, Materials & Ordering
Here’s how our custom phenolic labels are made and ordered — engraving defaults, material options, and mounting methods, so subcontractors and project managers have what they need for accurate, efficient orders. Whether you’re labeling electrical, solar, fire, or mechanical equipment, our engraved phenolic labels are built to hold up on the jobsite.
You may see these referred to as phenolic, lamacoid, or traffolyte labels — our Label FAQs explain the difference.
Built to Hold Up
We rotary-engrave every label. Many suppliers advertise laser-engraved plastic nameplates, but rotary engraving cuts deeper — so text stays legible far longer in heat, moisture, and daily jobsite wear.
- Durable phenolic construction — engraved on plastic to withstand heat, moisture, and daily wear
- Code-ready defaults — engraving aligned with NEC, OSHA, and trade standards
- Contractor-ready mounting — adhesive backing, screw/rivet holes, or chain-ready options
- Premium U.S.-made stock — engraved on Rowmark material, made in Findlay, Ohio, with no fillers

Our Standard Setup
Unless you request otherwise, here’s what comes with every phenolic label order:
- Material – Indoor micro-surfaced ABS plastic
- Thickness – 1/16″
- Finish – Matte, non-glare
- Edges – Beveled
- Mounting – Double-sided adhesive
- Text – All caps, centered
Material Construction: Three-layer laminated engraving plastic (3-ply), designed for permanent equipment identification. Engraving removes the top layer to expose a contrasting core, giving clean, high-contrast text.
“Three-layer” describes the laminate construction of the engraving plastic — it does not indicate a solid phenolic resin sheet.
Optional Add-Ons
Need something more specific? We offer these options to customize your engraved plastic labels:
- Outdoor-rated material – UV-stable, impact-modified acrylic
- Mounting holes for screws/rivets – Standard size: 1/8″ Dia.
- Combination – Adhesive backing and pre-drilled mounting holes
- Edges – Flat-cut instead of beveled
Temp power labeling: For temporary power, we typically engrave on our standard indoor ABS, which holds up through the life of most temp installations — so you’re not paying for permanent outdoor material you don’t need. We reserve the UV-stable acrylic for permanent outdoor labels, where it earns its cost.
